Laurie Thompson has been the Librarian for the Anne T. Kent California Room, Marin County Free Library, since the fall of 2001. She received her Master’s of Library Science degree from Columbia University where she specialized in Rare Books and Special Collections. She is the former Director of the Book Department at Butterfield & Butterfield and worked for many years as a rare book cataloguer and appraiser. The Anne T. Kent California Room Digital Archive was initiated by Laurie in 2003, as a way of sharing the California Room’s rich repository of photographs, oral histories and primary source materials with researchers everywhere, via the World Wide Web:

Laurie oversaw the digitization of the California Room oral history collection and secured grants for a number of special oral history projects, including a series that captured the stories of individuals who advocated for and were involved in the construction of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Marin County Civic Center. In conjunction with this project, Laurie was the curator for an exhibit on Frank Lloyd Wright that was first featured at the 2004 Marin County Fair and now hangs permanently in the halls of the Marin County Civic Center. Components of this exhibit are accessible on the California Room’s digital archive.

In 2006, under Laurie’s leadership, the California Room partnered with local author, Barry Spitz, to publish Marin: A History, highlighting 160 significant events in Marin County history and featuring images from the California Room’s collection of source materials. Laurie and the California Room staff are committed to collecting and preserving Marin County history and making it accessible to a broad audience.
